Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has proposed the formation of a powerful independent commission to investigate the assets of all Congress-affiliated public representatives who have held government positions since the restoration of democracy in 2046 BS (1990 AD).
Speaking at an interaction program titled ‘Gen-G Generation and Democratic Thought’ on Sunday, Thapa urged the party’s central committee to approve his proposal in an upcoming meeting. He suggested that the commission be coordinated by a former judge with no political affiliations, emphasizing the need for an impartial investigation into leaders’ wealth accumulation over the past three decades.
Thapa stressed that public trust, especially from the new generation (Gen-G), cannot be gained unless the party demonstrates a strong stance against corruption and irregularities. “Let’s form an investigation commission headed by someone the country trusts—neither from Congress, UML, nor Maoist. Let that person be above party bias,” he said.
He added that the commission must be empowered to investigate any leader regardless of their influence, and that the party must commit to accepting the commission’s report, even if it implicates senior leaders.
“The Nepali Congress has held power at every level—from wards to the center—since 2046 BS. It is our duty to be accountable,” Thapa stated. He emphasized that today's youth are demanding ethical politics, not leaders who justify personal enrichment based on past political contributions.
Thapa concluded by saying the biggest challenge for the Nepali Congress is to align itself with the expectations of the new generation, which seeks clean governance, transparency, and integrity in political leadership.
